Although Donegal gave its name to the county it is no longer the county town but it is still the hub for all things musical, poetic and cultural in the region. Tucked away in the North East of the country this border town is on the edge of some of some tremendous scenery close by the Blue Stack Mountains and the rolling breakers of the Atlantic Ocean.
Day 1
Our tour sees you arrive in Dublin via the ferry from Holyhead and an evening in or around the Irish capital, and an early opportunity to slow down to the Irish pace of life. Maybe venture into the city after your evening meal to sample the many bars and venues that make this marvellous city tick.
Day 2
Today we head north at a leisurely pace, travelling through Fermanagh and possibly stopping at the bustling market town of Enniskillen located right on the banks of Lough Erne. We aim to arrive at your hotel for late afternoon, allowing time to settle in before evening dinner.
Day 3
Named the ‘Land of Hearts Desire’ by one of Ireland’s most famous poet’s, WB Years, we head for his home town and place of inspiration – Sligo. Set on the banks of the Garavogue River you will see first hand why the young William Butler Yeats was so taken by then place. After exploring the town and its museums we can return to Donegal via the famous Belleek Pottery.
Day 4
If you ever wanted to get ‘lost’ then there is no finer place to lose yourself than in the Glenveagh National Park, surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery and with its very own fairytale castle.
Glenveagh Gardens were personally developed over 45 years by one Henry McIlhenny who collected plants from around the world to form one of Ireland’s premier gardens.
Day 5
A fond farewell to County Donegal as we head south for an overnight stay in the Dublin area, arriving mid afternoon so you can utilise your free time exploring the capital.
Day 6
Early morning ferry from Dublin port back to Holyhead as you commence your journey home.
